On August 1st, ReserveCalifornia™, the California State parks new, faster, easier reservation system went live. Between now and March 2018 they will phase in the ability to view the real-time reservation inventory, website trip planning and expanded payment options that includes state-of-the-art computerized point-of-sale and fee collection equipment that will allow debit and credit card payments at more locations. An additional 41 state parks will be added to the new service by March 2018. The new system enables visitors to reserve campsites and lodging six months in advance.
You can use the new system to make reservations at Colonel Allensworth SHP. The John L. Whitehead Jr. Campground, just north of the Mary Dickerson Memorial Library, offers visitors a place to stay with 115 year-round campsites. Normal amenities included, camp stoves and picnic tables at each campsite and flush toilets/showers nearby. Park visitors can also enjoy bicycling, birdwatching, hiking, and horseback riding.
The John L. Whitehead Jr. is named in honor of John L. “Mr. Death” Whitehead Jr, the first African American pilot to graduate from the U.S. Air Force Experimental Test Pilots School, the first African American instructor of jet pilots, and the first African American pilot to fly the B-47 jet bomber. He graduated from flight training on Sept 8, 1944, at Tuskegee Army Field in Alabama.
